Nikon F5, F100 and F6

Just a size comparison of the Nikon F5, the Nikon F100 and Nikon F6.

The F6 succeeded the F5 as the top Nikon film camera, which makes the F6 the world’s top 35mm SLR (IMHO). I always liked the F100 better than the F5 – the F6 feels like an upgraded F100.

Nikon releases new 24mm f/1.4 lens

Nikon has released the new AF-S Nikkor 24mm F/1.4G ED. From the specs this looks like a truly amazing lens. I already own the 50mm AF-S and it’s great. I would buy the 24mm 1.4 lens too if i hadn’t decided to go for the M9. These Nikon lenses are weather sealed and, i my personal opinion, better than the L-series lenses from Canon. It would be great if Nikon would also release a 35mm f/1.4 as their current 35mm lens (which i also own) is pretty lame.

I am currently experimenting with bw conversion tools for pictures taken with the D700. So far i like the results i get from ‘Alien Skin’ the most. (Though i still think it’s a bit weird to use cameras and software worth a few thousands euros, to simulate a look i get from a simple roll of Tri-X without any further effort.)

Fuji Provia 100F

First time in months i scanned color slides. I really must say that the colors coming from Fuji Provia are just marvellous. Too bad using slide film is so expensive. BTW: I took these pictures with the Nikon F100 and the brand new AF-S 50mm 1.4 – a very nice combination.

I donated an old Nikon FM to Ken Rockwells Retirment Range. Hope he can make some use of it.

“So anyway, after writing up the D3000 yesterday, I was overjoyed when I got a box from Berlin with a Nikon FM in it for the Retirement Ranch from Guido Steenkamp. He moved up to Leica some years ago, so the FM, with little to no resale value, went unused. I’m sure I’ll put it to good use.”

Anyway, make sure to visit Kens website once in a while. His technical reviews are great and not just the usual blabla. Ken is not always right but at least he’s got his own view on gear and is not afraid to write it down.

Nikon FA

The Nikon FA is the last camera of this little series. It’s small and offers all kinds of programs. Unlike the FM, the FA’s shutter is quite silent but on the other hand some of the body parts are made of plastic. I use this FA and the 50mm F1.4 in my office from time to time.

Nikon F100

This is my second F100. I broke the first one a few months ago and it was cheaper to get a new one than to pay for the Nikon Service to fix it. The F100 is the lightweight version of the F5. It’s very fast and has the best viewfinder of all cameras i have used so far.

Nikon FM

I don’t remember when or why i bought this Nikon FM. It’s quite small, very solid and does not need any batteries. Unfortunately the shutter is way too loud so i can’t use for street shots. I keep this camera in my car just in case i want to shoot something spontaneously (which has, so far, never been the case).

Nikon F4s

I bought my first Nikon F4s in 1995 when i was a student. I paid ‘only’ 950 Mark because the Rewind Motor and AF were broken. At that time the price was as much as 3 months of rent for my apartment. Even after 13 years this is still a fantastic camera.

My beautifull Nikon F100 died today after falling from about 2 meters to the ground. The lens is still working and the camera body looks perfect, but somehow the electronics of the camera are confused. The display tells me that the batteries are empty (they are not, i already tried different ones) and none of the controls are working. Have to find out if it’s cheaper to get a new camera from eBay or to find somebody who can fix this…
